Musical flowers or roses with thorns? Dr. Patrick Hawkins, from the University of South Carolina and who recently coached this repertoire in Italy with Lorenzo Ghielmi, will help demystify Frescobaldi's Fiori Musicale with a closer exploration of the Madonna Mass for the organ. He will discuss issues of performance practices including: registration, tempo and metrical changes, ornamentation, and musical freedom found in this early Baroque repertoire. Organists are encouraged to bring their editions of this score (print or online editions such as found on IMSLP) in order to make notations about possible score errors and/or variants as well as when the usage of the pedal is appropriate.
Based in Columbia, SC, Patrick Hawkins is Director of Music at Incarnation Lutheran Church, Director of Chapel Music at Lenoir-Rhyne University, and instructor of organ at University of South Carolina.
